"Brown Penny" by William Butler Yeats

Wed Oct 14, 2009, 7:25 PM
I whispered, "I am too young,"
And then, "I am old enough";
Wherefore I threw a penny
To find out if I might love.
"Go and love, go and love, young man,
If the lady be young and fair."
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
I am looped in the loops of her hair.

O love is the crooked thing,
There is nobody wise enough
To find out all that is in it,
For he would be thinking of love
Till the stars had run away
And the shadows eaten the moon.
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
One cannot begin it too soon.

"Brown Penny," W.B. Yeats

My goodness, I love this poem.

Here I am. I'm a graphic designer and a metalsmith. This is my work. Creating things brings a great deal of joy to my life.

I'm chill, I'm energetic, I love a good laugh, and I can never seem to sit still for very long. :)

Erica,
Glad you like the copper rose. There is a lot of beauty in the world. Some of it is sturdy and persists. Some only lasts a short time and can be very fragile. The world would have us all believe that beauty is at the mercy of power. But, in fact, beauty returns over and over in one way or another.

So, you study design... my son is in Chicago. He has studied design latest at Columbia College there. But, he decided that cranking out product designs was not his forte. For the time being, he is a trained bicycle mechanic, racer and all round idea machine....a great life for a young person. Sounds like you are also fired up with the creative impulse. Well, keep going, and keep a smile going too. As for me, I intend to keep on expressing one kind of beauty or another, as a reflection of what I has caught my eye and heart all my life. Smitty

Your work is beautiful and I admire it very much. and I agree. I think that you don't necessarily have to search very hard to find beauty in this world either. It's everywhere.

I actually had the opportunity to visit Chicago last September for a design conference and I was completely taken back by the limitless inspirations that thrive in the city. Your son is a very lucky fellow. I, myself, try to keep that fire burning as fervently as I can, and it seems to be working alright for me so far :) I can't wait to see what the future brings.
